Pursuits Program

The Pursuits Program is a four-credit integrated leadership program designed for students in grades 11 and 12 at Georgian Bay Secondary School. The program runs for an entire semester, starting in the fall. The course is designed for students looking for adventure, leadership, and challenge and facilitates the achievement of personal goals and academic success. Students learn by experience enriching their learning at school. Pursuits students receive the following courses: Food & Nutritional Science (HFA 4U/C), Recreation and Fitness Leadership(PLF 4M), Interdisciplinary Studies (IDC 4U/O), and Gr. 11 English (ENG3U/C). Students in Pursuits are given the opportunity to go on various outdoor trips. These trips are designed to let the students improve their tripping skills, leadership, fitness, nutrition, and overall self-confidence out-of-doors. The various trips include traveling to the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre, an 11 day canoe trip in Killarney Provincial Park, a 4 day hiking trip along the Bruce Trail, a 3 day multi-sport Beaver Crawl, and a 4 day winter trip in Algonquin Provincial Park. The Pursuits Program started in 2005 and is currently in its 11th year at GBSS. Pursuits gives students the chance to learn about themselves while developing an appreciation for others and the outdoors. Throughout the semester they are able to participate in leadership placements, extracurricular activities, field trips, community service, and various events. Students are faced with intellectual, mental, and physical challenges to develop the strength and discipline they need to successfully adapt to a dynamic and changing world. At the end of the semester, students come out with an understanding that "life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it." Leadership. Adventure. Challenge.
