J. Bungay Construction Co. Ltd. (Bungay) was started over thirty years ago by Jim Bungay (Sr.). – a second generation master carpenter (inter-provincial certified) working in the trade since he was 13 years old. Our company started as a small renovation company doing small jobs for people throughout Halifax / Dartmouth. Halifax is a small city, and with Jim’s reputation for quality work and fair prices, J. Bungay Construction Co. Ltd. began to grow. Our workload began including the construction and renovation of custom homes with intricate detailing that needed a highly skilled tradesman. Our business continued to grow on its reputation of quality. As the business grew, there was more of a demand to build homes that appeal to the bulk of our population. Through the mid- late 80’s and early 90’s, with the ample supply of building lots in HRM and surrounding areas, Bungay built more and more small – mid sized family homes – all with the same dedication to quality. When others were cutting corners to make a couple of bucks here and there, we were building to ensure our namesake was associated with quality and honesty. Bungay built hundreds of homes during this period – and our customers were still using words like quality, honesty and integrity to describe our company. Also during the late 80’s and early 90’s, the business began to emerge as a true family construction company. Jim Sr. was complemented by wife Dale who ran the office and managed all administrative duties. Sons Jim Jr. and Steve divided their time between framing, finishing, landscaping and good old fashioned cleaning – all the while watching Jim Sr. and learning the importance of quality, and honesty. In the 1990’s, a lot of changes came to the housing industry – training, certification and improvement. Bungay construction stayed ahead of the rest with the R-200 program, certified industry homebuilding certification and association with the Atlantic New Home warranty program. To further add to the completeness of this business, Steve completed his realtors licensing in the early 90’s while Jim Jr. went the route of civil engineering. Entering the new millennium, Bungay was poised with a master carpenter / certified housing professional, a licensed realtor and a civil structural engineer. One area of re-growth for Bungay over the past 5-6 years has been the area of Renovations. Most specifically, the Extreme Makeover style renovations that require the manpower and resources of a larger company to design, build and manage these undertaking, but the attention to detail, and dedication to quality of a smaller building professional.
