Welcome to the official home of the Brasa St Thomas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy. Our facility is dedicated to high quality instruction for people of all ages. We offer programs that have three main focuses for personal development First is MARTIAL ARTS to build the mind body and spirit of every individual that walks through the door. The confidence gained through the lessons taught, will give anyone the skills to manage any situation they encounter on and off the mat. Students quickly discover that it is possible achieve things that were previously thought as impossible. A strong sense of discipline and confidence combined with a raise in fitness level are direct results of the martial arts component of training. This leads us to the number one reason that people think about when it comes to martial arts training. SELF DEFENSE; self defense is a real concern for everyone. Self preservation and the protection of family is the highest of ones primal instincts. There is no better system when it comes to surviving an attack than Jiu Jitsu by way of Brazil. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as we know it today was developed by the Gracie family as a method defeating an opponent regardless of size. Jiu Jitsu is designed to control the course of an attack through the use of leverage not strength and athleticism. This was proven many times by Helio Gracie, a cofounder of the art along with his brother Carlos, who was taught by the famous Mitsuyo Maeda of Japan. The Gracie brothers added to the Japnese fighting system an proved its effectiveness through the form of challenge matches, by defeating many larger and stronger experiences fighters. These challenge matches of the mid 1900's gave birth to todays sport of mixed martial arts and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Through this no rules form of self defense using the methods taught one can choose the level of damage given out in a physical conflict. This is so effective because of the specialized way of live training that is taught in every Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school. The sport of Brazilian has taken the world by storm with millions of practitioners hitting the mats daily in preparation for various levels of Competition. Ranging from local regional events to Provincial, National, and International championships. The attraction to test one's skills against a fully resist fellow practitioner is strong among those who choose this path. Although this is not for everyone, nor is it required to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, we do offer a strong competition team at our Academy. In fact TEAM BRASA is one of the largest and highly regarded teams in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world. Our Academy is just one many Brasa clubs world wide.
