Beginning with the desire to showcase the richness of Fogo Island’s locality, craft heritage and wealth of local knowledge, Shorefast Foundation set out to create a collection of furnishings for the Fogo Island Inn. A group of artists and designers from away were invited to come to Fogo Island to work alongside local artisans in this powerfully elemental place. They became immersed in place and in the specific ways of knowing that are of this place. Fogo Islanders have lived in a delicate negotiation with of the North Atlantic for centuries and are a people who, by virtue of their geographic isolation, have become masters of making things by hand, recycling, and devising local solutions to all manner of challenges. These collaborations between the visiting designers and local artisans resulted in the design and local production of the furnishings for the Fogo Island Inn, and formed the genesis of the Fogo Island Shop.
