This page is about the GTP Biggar Railway Station located in Biggar Saskatchewan that is in need of help to preserve it before it is too late.
The Station is a Town landmark built in 1909. It is an example of a Grand Trunk Pacific Railway pre-first world war rural railway station design. Its design was influenced by the artistic bungalow style of the 20th early century. The Biggar Railway Station was designated first in 1976 as a National Historic site and then second in 1995 as a Heritage Railway Station. The designations apply to the foot print of the station, architecture of the station, exterior elements and limited on the interior elements.
In my investigation to date I have learned that many of the Town’s people are very familiar with the stations condition and want to see the station revitalized as it is the focal point of the downtown core of Biggar. As this project moves forward, inviting people to view the interior prior to redevelopment may be an important step to build support for the project. Although the station is sturdy and robust, previous alterations to the interior and neglect of repairs and maintenance require immediate attention. Creating a greater connection to the Town through a path, signage, and lighting will be important. In Biggar the downtown is the hub of activity. The Railway Station has the potential to operate as a hub for gathering on a smaller scale. As a potential for some sort of commercial establishment in the station itself and also in the surrounding lands adjacent to the station.
