SS Sicamous Heritage Park

At the turn of the last century, stern wheelers, tugs, barges and other vessels were virtually the only mode of transport available to the remote communities around Okanagan Lake. The lake boats brought in the immigrants, supplies and passengers and took out the fruit, ore, lumber and other products that built the Okanagan's economy and made the settlement of the South Okanagan possible. The SS Sicamous was the last stern wheeler to be launched on the Lake, but it was far from the only ship. Sister ship's the SS Aberdeen and SS Okanagan could also be found traveling the lake, while similar vessels could be found all over the inland waters of BC. The SS Sicamous was retired from service in 1936, after 22 years of faithful service. She was towed back to Penticton in 1951, after the City purchased her for $1. The SS Sicamous Marine Heritage Society was founded in 1988 and has been working ever since, striving to restore and protect this important part of our cultural heritage.
