Shady Lane Swiss & Just-For-Fun Holsteins

Our farm has been in the family since 1833. It started as the Armstrong family farm & then was passed on to Barrie Drummond from his Aunt Bess Armstrong in the late 1970's. It was a Shorthorn beef cattle farm at the time. In the early 1980's, Barrie and Diane and their children Ken, Dan and Holly made the decision to go into cream production. The herd consisted of grade jerseys, holsteins and few crossbreds. The opportunity to purchase some brown swiss animals arose, and they started on their brown swiss adventure! In the early 1990's, they had the opportunity to exchange their cream quota to fluid milk quota, which they did and started shipping fluid milk. By 1997 the herd was comprised of 100% registered brown swiss. Ken graduated from MacDonald College in the spring of 1999, and joined the farm as a partner in Shady Lane Swiss SENC, which consisted of 20 kilograms of quota, 30 brown swiss animals and 35 beef cows. The farm has experienced many changes since then. We still have many brown swiss, but also now have holsteins. They were acquired when we bought a farm nearby with its cows and quota in 2002. In 2011 we purchased part of the Drummond Homestead farm when Barrie's brother retired from farming. We milk approximately 55 cows and no longer have the beef herd. Ken & Shannon were married in 2007, and welcomed their son Riley in the spring of 2010. The Drummond Family consists of Barrie & Diane; Ken, Shannon & Riley; Dan, Lyzanne & Khloe, and Holly, Jared, Faith & Clarke Hamilton. Farming has always been a passion for our family, and has provided the opportunity to help establish Dan on his own dairy farm, and Holly and Jared in layer chickens. Our family enjoys showing cattle as well as educating the public on where milk comes from and how we produce it. We hope that future generations will also share our passion for farming, and appreciate the family lifestyle it allows!
