DRPS Youth in Policing

The goal of the program is to inspire young people to look at the many different aspects of policing as a career choice and to empower students to become ambassadors for the Durham Regional Police Service. As ambassadors, the students will work to improve police and community relations. Successful students will be working closely with members of the police service learning leadership, team building and communication skills. The Youth In Policing Initiative was founded in 2008 in partnership with the Ministry of Child and Youth Services. The initiative is an employment and personal development opportunity for youth ages 15-18. As employees of the Durham Regional Police Service, youth will engage in hands-on learning experiences that emphasize the importance of leadership, teamwork, and community engagement. Youth will be exposed to the career of policing and have the opportunity to interact with the many different sectors of the police service. The Youth In Policing Initiative is hosted twice a year in the following capacities: • Summer Program: Eight-week program, 35 hrs a week, July-August. The hiring process for the summer program typically begins in late February to early March of each year. At that time, applications will be posted on our website. • After-school Program: 14-week program, 9 hrs a week, November-March. The hiring process for the After-school Program typically begins in late August to early September of each year. Again, applications will be posted on our website.
