Discover Squamish

Squamish is located between Vancouver and Whistler being a 40 minute drive to Vancouver and a 35 minute drive to Whistler. It is nestled in the Garibaldi range along the shores of the Howe Sound. Squamish has an approximate population of 15,000 people including the Squamish Nation. Squamish originates after the beginning construction of the Pacific Great Eastern railway in 1910. Squamish was traditionally dependant on the forestry industry with the large Western Pulp operation, however once the mill closed in 2006 this was no longer the case. From this point in time a transitionary period began towards tourism as it became increasingly important to the regions economy. Squamish offers an array of outdoor activities that is a paradise for every adrenaline junkie and nature lover. Currently there are 1200 rock climbing routes and 2500 bouldering “problems” and in the next 5 years there will be an increase of 10% in both of those areas. Furthermore in regards to the proposed Garibaldi ski resort development there will be a final decision in the next 5 years as to the judgment as to it future in the area and incorperation into the community. Included in this proposal are two golf courses, 25 ski lifts, half a million square foot retail centre on highway 99 and 22,000 bed units to accommodate the guests. Currently there are around 600 biking trails throughout Squamish and with the aid of SORCA (Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association) this will have a 5 year expansion of 5%. The current infrastructure for grassroots programs in the community for the residents has continued to expand with the development of skateboard parks, bmx tracks, soccer fields, hockey rinks and climbing gyms. The hiking trails throughout Squamish are of world caliber highlighted with the easy access to landmarks such as the Chief and Shannon Falls which have not just become provincial but national landmarks as well. Other recreational activities include swimming, kite-boarding, base jumping, cliff jumping, photography and anything else your mind can dream up. Nature's your playground, so lets play.
