The Brick House Legacy Built in 1956 by William Coldwell was himself an artisan as a brick layer and stone mason. He and his wife Ferne (Nowlan) raised ten children here. The Coldwell family has been in this part of the valley since 1760 upon the arrival of Captain William Coldwell from Cornwall, England and his family who came overland from Maryland. With the Coldwell family motto ‘Fac et Spera’ or ‘Do and Hope’, at the age of sixty-four father William as he is still referred to, brought seven of his sons with him just ahead of the planters. Ferne Nowlan was the daughter of Emery Nowlan (1889 – 1982), a well known folk artist, his work is archived in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. ‘Cor unum via una’, the Nowlan (Nolan, Noullain) family motto is interpreted, ‘As we journey together let us strive to go with one heart.’ In purchasing the Brick House, which will feature a café and with the gallery highlighting folk art and heritage crafts, daughter Susan Coldwell is extending an invitation to journey together.
