All Souls' Chapel, Charlottetown

St. Peter's Cathedral is certainly one of the smallest Cathedrals in our country, but is one which has contributed out of all proportion to its size to the life of the Church Catholic in our country. Aside from a very active life of worship, the Parish is home to many lay groups which serve various important roles in the parish. From A.C.W groups, to Men's and Young Men's groups, an Altar Guild, Choir and Servers Guild there is surely something for everybody. Sunday services are held at 8am (Said Mass) and 10am (Sung Mass) in the Cathedral, with the weekday services held in our beloved All Souls' Chapel. For a full service schedule see the link above in our 'About' section! St. Peter's Cathedral was built in 1869 as a 'Chapel of Ease' to St. Paul's, the Parish Church on Queen's Square. The church began as a convenience for poor people living around 'The Bog', near Governor's Pond in Victoria Park. The area was rough and tumble, but the church establishbed itself and eventually opened a boy's school for neighbourhood children. In 1879 Bishop Hibbert Binney, the 4th Bishop of Nova Scotia, whose Letters Patent from the Crown gave him episcopal jurisdiction in PEI made it his Cathedral on the Island in 1870. We are a church with a superb choir and music, beautiful liturgy, strong orthodox Christian teaching and preaching, and a tradition of service to our community. From it's founding, St. Peter's Cathedral has been noted for its witness to and celebration of the Catholic tradition of Anglicanism. Our attached Chapel, All Souls' Chapel was added to the cathedral by 1888 and was built in memory of the Cathedral's first rector, the Reverend George Wright Hodgson, who served from the founding of the parish in 1869 until his death in 1885. The chapel was built in 1888 to plans prepared by William Critchlow Harris, ARCA (1854-1913), a son of the parish who was among the first class confirmed at St. Peter's in 1869. The walls of the chapel are adorned with 15 paintings by William Critchlow's brother, Robert Harris, CMG, PRCA (1849-1919). Both William and Robert are well known and celebrated throughout the Maritimes and the rest of Canada for their artistic and architectural work. The arched reredos with statues of apostles occupying the niches is very typical of William Harris' altar screens and the round painting above the reredos is of The Ascension of Christ and has been a treasured icon to generations of Cathedral parishioners. The chapel was built by the Lowe Brothers of Charlottetown and the woodwork throughout was carved by Messrs Whitlock and Doull.
