Aboriginal Health Programs is here for First Nations, Inuit and Métis patients and their families, and First Nations, Inuit and Métis staff working within the Winnipeg Health Region. Aboriginal Health Programs operates as part of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and has three streams: Workforce Development, Health Services and Health Education. AHP - Health Services is committed to improving the health and well-being of Aboriginal individuals. AHP – Health Services is available to individuals receiving health care in the Winnipeg Health Region and available include interpreter services, discharge planning, advocacy and spiritual/cultural care. Services are free of charge and accessed by staff or individuals by calling 940-8880 or 1-877-940-8880. AHP – Health Services staff work as part of a patient’s health-care team. AHP – Workforce Development strives to develop a representative workforce within the Winnipeg Health Region that accurately reflects the cultural population of Winnipeg. Activities include recruitment of qualified Aboriginal people, promotion of employment within the Winnipeg Health Region for Aboriginal youth, and the development of retention strategies for existing Aboriginal health care workers. Workforce Development supports the WRHA’s commitment to deliver culturally appropriate health services to the community. Contact us at 940-8737. AHP - Health Education is the regional education and training component within Aboriginal Health Programs. The mission of AHP - Health Education is to build understanding between health-care management and staff, and Aboriginal people, patients and families. AHP - Health Education training also focuses on enhancing opportunities for all those who work within the Winnipeg Health Region to build culturally respectful workplaces and practices, and a representative workforce. Currently Health Education offers staff workshops on the following topics: Aboriginal Cultures Awareness, Traditional Teachings, Sweat Lodge Teachings, Honouring All Cultures in the Workplace: Aboriginal Cultures and Diversity and Palliative Care: Aboriginal Perspectives on End of Life.
